How a mid-round draft pick overcame surgery to reach the Major Leagues
In short: In 2021, Colton Gordon faced a career-altering decision: undergo Tommy John surgery or risk his future. Despite the procedure, the left-handed pitcher's resilience propelled him from the eighth round of the MLB draft to a Major League debut in 2025, proving that even significant injuries can be overcome.
Colton Gordon's journey to professional baseball was marked by both high-level dominance and significant physical setbacks. Growing up in Florida, Gordon established himself as a premier talent at Lakewood Ranch High School, where he was ranked as the sixth best left-handed pitcher in the state. His collegiate career saw him transition from Hillsborough Community College to the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he demonstrated remarkable efficiency. In 2021, he achieved a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.54, a figure that ranked fourth-best in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).
However, his momentum was interrupted in May 2021 when he underwent Tommy John surgery during his senior year at UCF. Even though he sat out fifty per cent of that year, Gordon's skill was obvious; the Houston Astros picked him during the 2021 MLB draft's eighth round, offering a $127,500 bonus. His recovery was steady, moving through the minor leagues with the Florida Complex League Astros, Fayetteville Woodpeckers, and Asheville Tourists. By 2022, he had secured a spot as an MiLB.com Organization All-Star, showcasing a diverse arsenal that included a four-seam fastball reaching up to 94 mph and a mid-70s curveball.
Gordon's ascent continued through 2023 and 2024, during which he became a standout in the Pacific Coast League (PCL). He earned multiple PCL All-Star nods and was named Pitcher of the Week. This consistent performance culminated in his Major League debut on May 14, 2025, for the Houston Astros. His career has since seen him represent Team Israel in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and, eventually, a trade to the Milwaukee Brewers in July 2026.
