The Italian manager who became a 'little Pep' of the south
In short: Vincenzo Italiano is redefining modern Italian tactics by blending the possession-heavy philosophies of Pep Guardiola with a gritty, pragmatic edge. From a versatile midfielder to a coach who led Fiorentina to back-to-back European finals, his journey is a masterclass in tactical evolution and disciplined offensive balance.
Born in West Germany to Sicilian parents, Italiano's playing career was defined by his role as a versatile central midfield playmaker. Influenced by legends like Andrea Pirlo and Demetrio Albertini, he specialized as a 'regista'—a deep-lying playmaker. He was noted for his long-ball range, vision, and ability to dictate tempo, while also possessing a powerful striking ability from outside the box. He spent the majority of his playing days with Hellas Verona, debuting in Serie A at just 19 years old in 1997.
Transitioning to management, Italiano first honed his craft with amateur teams in Veneto before rising through the Italian tiers. He achieved significant success with Spezia, securing the club's first-ever promotion to Serie A in the 2019–20 season. His tactical blueprint often utilizes a 4–3–3 formation featuring a deep-lying playmaker flanked by 'mezzali' (box-to-box midfielders) capable of late attacking runs. Like Arrigo Sacchi, Italiano emphasizes that every player, regardless of role, must be involved in the build-up of attacking plays.
His tenure at Fiorentina cemented his reputation, where he became the first manager to reach back-to-back UEFA Europa Conference League finals (2022–23 and 2023–24). While praised for his aggressive pressing and high defensive line, he has faced criticism for a perceived inability to convert possession into goals. Despite these debates, his ability to balance high-intensity attacking with disciplined defensive blocks has earned him comparisons to Pep Guardiola and high honors, including the Golden Neptune of the City of Bologna in 2025.
