The architect of Italian football's most dominant modern dynasties
In short: From the lower tiers of Italian football to the heights of the Champions League, Giuseppe Marotta has mastered the art of the squad overhaul. His ability to assemble elite talent at minimal cost has transformed struggling giants into trophy-winning powerhouses, redefining how football clubs are managed.
Giuseppe Marotta's career is defined by a remarkable ability to revitalize clubs through strategic recruitment. After starting as a youth director at Varese in 1978, he climbed through the ranks of Serie C1 and Serie B, building a reputation for navigating the complexities of Italian football. His time at Sampdoria showed his talent for rebuilding teams; by combining seasoned veterans with emerging talents, he secured a second-place spot in 2002–03 and returned the club to European competition for the first time in years.
Marotta's most significant impact occurred during his time at Juventus, which began in May 2010. He famously orchestrated a massive squad overhaul, acquiring 14 new players while offloading 11 others. This period saw the assembly of one of Europe's most efficient midfields. By utilizing free transfers and strategic signings like Paul Pogba and Andrea Pirlo, the club constructed a midfield that cost less than €15 million cumulatively but contributed over one-third of the team's goals during their 2015 Champions League run.
Since joining Inter Milan in December 2018, Marotta has ended a decade-long trophy drought. Under his leadership, Inter has secured multiple Scudetto titles, including those in 2021 and 2024, alongside several Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana trophies. His influence has been so profound that following the acquisition of the club by Oaktree Capital Management in June 2024, he was elevated to the role of President and Sporting CEO.
