In short: Yemen's football journey is a study in resilience. From a fractured past where two teams existed for one land to a modern era of playing home matches in exile, the national team carries the weight of a country seeking unity through the beautiful game.

The current Yemeni national team is a product of geographical and political division. Before the 1990 unification, two distinct teams existed for North and South Yemen. Today, the national team inherits the records of North Yemen. To foster a sense of national identity following the merger, captains from both regions were initially alternated in matches to promote a 'unified' Yemen.

The team's early history was marked by significant struggles. North Yemen debuted at the 1966 Arab Cup, where they suffered a heavy 13–0 loss to Libya. It took nearly two decades for the team to return to international competition in 1984. Their first World Cup qualification attempt occurred in 1985, and they didn't see their first major victory until August 9, 1985, against the UAE.

Modern history has been defined by both progress and extreme hardship. Yemen finally qualified for the AFC Asian Cup as a unified nation in 2019, following a difficult qualification path that included a victory over Tajikistan in 2017. However, the ongoing civil war has forced the team into a nomadic existence, requiring them to play home matches at neutral venues in Saudi Arabia.

Yemen's historical achievements have lagged behind its regional peers, even though it ranks as the Middle East's fifth most populous nation. They have only qualified for the AFC Asian Cup twice since 1990. Recent years have seen a volatile trajectory, with the team hitting a record low FIFA ranking of 186th in 2014 before finding recent sparks of success, such as a 2024 victory over Bahrain in the Arabian Gulf Cup.
