Kuwait's footballing rise and the resilience of a nation in exile
In short: From winning the 1980 AFC Asian Cup to facing multiple FIFA suspensions, Kuwait's national team has navigated extreme highs and devastating lows. Even during the 1990 Iraqi invasion, athletes competed under exceptional circumstances to represent their country on the global stage.
The Kuwait national football team's history is marked by a period of immense success followed by profound disruption. During his 1978–1990 presidency of the Kuwait Football Association, Sheikh Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah led the squad to become the inaugural Arab Asian side to reach a FIFA World Cup, competing in Spain during 1982. This era also saw Kuwait win the 1980 AFC Asian Cup.
The 1990 Iraqi invasion caused severe damage to the nation's sporting infrastructure, including the destruction of the Football Association's headquarters and various facilities. During the occupation, many athletes were displaced or forced into exile. Despite these hardships, Kuwaiti athletes participated in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, with 42 athletes, including 23 football players, representing the nation from Saudi Arabia.
The team has also faced significant administrative challenges, including three notable FIFA suspensions due to governmental interference or failure to comply with regulations: in 2007, 2008, and 2015. The 2015 ban proved devastating, as the squad's FIFA World Ranking plummeted from 139th to 189th, while they also failed to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
In recent years, the team has worked to rebuild its legacy. After qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in June 2024, the squad has continued to compete in regional tournaments, such as the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup, marking a period of renewed effort to reclaim its historical status as a dominant force in the Arabian Gulf Cup.
