How Ford Reimagined the Iconic Mustang as an All-Electric Crossover for the Modern Era
For the first time in 55 years, Ford has expanded the Mustang family into the electric age. The 2021 Mustang Mach-E is an all-electric SUV designed with all-American ideals, featuring advanced liquid-cooled battery technology, performance-oriented motor configurations, and a unique approach to home charging that integrates seamlessly with residential infrastructure.
The 2021 Mustang Mach-E represents a significant shift for the brand, moving the Mustang nameplate into the crossover segment. Available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, the vehicle utilizes permanent magnet motors to deliver substantial performance. In its extended-range all-wheel-drive configuration, the Mach-E targets 332 horsepower and 417 lb.-ft. of torque. For those seeking higher performance, the GT and GT Performance Edition models aim for even greater output, targeting 459 horsepower and 612 lb.-ft. of torque, with acceleration times comparable to high-end sports cars like the Porsche 911 GTS.
At the heart of the Mach-E are two battery options: a 75.7 kWh standard-range pack and a 98.8 kWh extended-range pack. These lithium-ion batteries are positioned on the floor between the axles to optimize vehicle dynamics. The packs contain either 288 or 376 cells, respectively, and are housed in a waterproof, crash-protected casing. To ensure reliability across diverse climates, the batteries are liquid-cooled, a system tested at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain performance and charging efficiency.
Recognizing that 80 percent of charging occurs at home, Ford has developed a strategy to simplify the ownership experience. The vehicle comes with a mobile charger compatible with standard 240V outlets, capable of adding about 22 miles of range per hour. For faster replenishment, the optional Ford Connected Charging station can increase this to approximately 32 miles per charging hour. To streamline the transition for new owners, Ford has partnered with Amazon Home to coordinate professional installation by licensed electricians, ensuring the infrastructure is ready for the vehicle's arrival.
