How Cadillac’s first electric SUV redefined the luxury crossover market
In short: The Cadillac Lyriq marks a pivotal shift for General Motors, serving as the brand's first fully electric vehicle. Built on the specialized BEV3 platform, this luxury crossover aims to blend high-performance electric power with sophisticated, newly designed interior components for a premium driving experience.
The Lyriq represents a significant technological leap for General Motors, utilizing the brand's first production vehicle built on the BEV3 platform. This architecture features a unibody chassis with a skateboard-style powertrain, where a flat battery sits beneath the floor. To ensure a premium feel, Cadillac designers avoided using any pre-existing GM parts for the interior, opting instead for entirely new components. This model features a five-link multilink suspension paired with frequency-sensitive hydraulic dampers. Additionally, it comes standard with run-flat all-season tyres on 20-inch wheels.
Performance varies significantly across global markets and configurations. In the United States, the 2024 model year dual-motor version offers an EPA-estimated 314 miles of range. For those seeking more intensity, a $1,200 'Velocity Package' OTA update can increase torque, reducing 0–60 mph times from 4.7 to 4.4 seconds. The high-performance Lyriq-V, unveiled in China in March 2025, takes this further with a peak output of 615 hp and a 3.3-second 0–60 mph sprint when using its 'Velocity Max' mode. A 2026 version is anticipated to arrive during late 2025. This high-performance variant uses the same 102 kWh battery as the standard dual-motor version.
The vehicle's manufacturing is a global operation. While North American models are assembled in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the Lyriq is produced locally in Yantai, China, to serve Asian markets. Such worldwide presence enabled the Lyriq to reach major goals, such as becoming America's top-selling luxury midsize electric SUV during 2024 and securing the German 'Car of the Year 2025' title within the luxury class. The vehicle supports DC fast charging at up to 190 kW. It also offers 19.2 kW Level 2 AC charging for convenience.
