The luxury sedan that became a high-stakes study in production fragility
In short: The Fisker Karma was a masterpiece of design that nearly collapsed under the weight of its own complexity. While it won prestigious awards for its hybrid technology, it also became a lightning rod for debates over battery safety, manufacturing hurdles, and the precarious nature of green-energy scaling.
Produced by Fisker Automotive between 2011 and 2012, the Karma was a luxury plug-in range-extended electric sports sedan. Manufactured by Valmet Automotive in Finland, it featured a unique series-hybrid powertrain: two 120 kW electric motors were powered by a 20.1 kWh lithium-ion battery or a 260 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine sourced from General Motors. This setup meant the electric motors were the only mechanical driving force connected to the wheels.
Despite its high-end branding, the car faced significant technical and logistical hurdles. The EPA rated it as a subcompact car due to its small cabin volume, which prevented a rear bench and limited seating to four. Furthermore, the vehicle's reliability was plagued by early manufacturing defects. A misaligned welding robot at the A123 Systems factory produced defective batteries, leading to a breakdown during a Consumer Reports test and a subsequent $55 million replacement program. The car also faced multiple safety concerns, including a coolant leak risk that prompted a recall of the first 239 units built.
The Karma's journey serves as a case study in the risks of rapid innovation. While it achieved a 125 mph top speed and won the 'Car of the Year' award on Top Gear, it struggled with production consistency. Production was suspended in November 2012 after its sole battery supplier, A123 Systems, filed for bankruptcy. The company eventually filed for bankruptcy in late 2013, with its assets—including the plug-hybrid powertrain rights—later sold to the Chinese company Wanxiang, which rebranded the successor as the Karma Revero in 2016.
