The world's largest factory is a high-speed hub for the Cybertruck
In short: Tesla's Gigafactory Texas isn't just another assembly line; it is a massive architectural feat and a strategic production hub. Ranking as the world's largest factory by square footage, it serves as the primary home for the Cybertruck and the company's corporate headquarters.
Construction on Gigafactory Texas began in July 2020 in unincorporated Travis County, just outside of Austin. The site was selected from a shortlist that included Nashville and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The decision followed a period of intense competition where various regions offered land procurement assistance, regulatory navigation, and tax incentives. In July 2020, a $68 million tax incentive deal was authorised by the Del Valle Independent School District, alongside roughly $50 million from the Texas Tax Code Chapter 313 scheme provided by the state.
The facility's scale is immense, making it the second-largest building by volume in the world, surpassed only by the Boeing Everett Factory. Beyond its physical footprint, it serves as a critical manufacturing node for the Model Y, the Cybertruck, the Cybercab, and Tesla's upcoming next-generation vehicle. The factory's production capabilities scaled rapidly; it reached a run rate of 1,000 units per week in late June 2022, tripling to 3,000 units per week by December 15, 2022.
Technological milestones at the site include the installation of Giga Press high-press die-casting machines, with foundations poured in January 2021. From an investment perspective, Elon Musk estimated in December 2021 that the project would require at least $10 billion in total investment and could eventually employ up to 20,000 people. While the factory is a cornerstone for Tesla, it exists within a broader North American battery ecosystem, where suppliers like Panasonic have also begun establishing nearby production sites in states like Kansas.
The factory's timeline reflects a rapid transition from planning to production. While limited Model Y production began before the end of 2021, the official opening was marked by a 'Cyber Rodeo' on April 7, 2022. This transition was supported by a 14-week manufacturing training program launched in cooperation with the Austin Community College District, ensuring a local workforce was prepared for the high-tech demands of the facility.
