In short: In 1999, Jaguar revived a legendary nameplate to create a luxury saloon that hid a corporate secret. While it wore the face of a British aristocrat, its mechanical bones were shared with American giants like Ford and Lincoln, marking a pivotal era of industrial cross-pollination.

The Jaguar S-Type debuted at the 1998 Birmingham Motor Show, reviving a nameplate first used between 1963 and 1968. Produced during Ford's ownership of Jaguar, the S-Type was a strategic exercise in shared engineering. The Lincoln LS and eleventh-generation Ford Thunderbird also employed the DEW98 platform used by this model. This collaborative architecture even persisted after the S-Type's discontinuation in 2007, as the successor Jaguar XF used a modified version of that same platform. The car's engineering was a complex tapestry of global contributions. While the body was styled by Geoff Lawson and manufactured at the Castle Bromwich facility in England, the engines told a different story. The 3.0-litre V6 was originally conceived by Porsche for a replacement 944 before being developed by Ford into the Duratec unit.

Jaguar then refined it with their own designed heads and variable valve timing. Conversely, the 2.7-litre twin-turbodiesel was a Ford/Peugeot unit used across multiple brands, including Citroën and Land Rover. Performance enthusiasts were treated to the supercharged S-Type R in 2002. With an Eaton M112 supercharger and a custom 4.2-litre AJ V8, the vehicle reached 400 hp, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. While it was praised for its 'proper rear-drive Jag' handling, it faced scrutiny for its lack of a limited-slip differential and supercharger whine. Despite its shared DNA, the car was celebrated for its refinement, with the 2.7 V6 diesel specifically noted for its ability to 'wean anyone off petrol power.'
