The executive saloon that forced a platform compromise for speed
In short: Jaguar's XF was designed to be a revolutionary leap in luxury, intended to sit on an all-aluminium platform. However, board-imposed time constraints forced a pivot to a heavily modified Ford platform, creating a unique engineering hybrid that balanced high-end aesthetics with industrial pragmatism.
Launched in Autumn 2007 as the successor to the S-Type, the XF (internally designated X250) represented the first of Jaguar's new styled era. Designed by Ian Callum, the car aimed to blend 'saloon within a coupé' proportions with modern luxury. While the exterior featured high-tech elements like flush-fitting air vents that rotate open only when the engine starts, the underlying architecture tells a story of corporate pressure. To meet development deadlines, Jaguar abandoned its planned all-aluminium platform in favor of a heavily modified Ford DEW98 platform.
Despite this compromise, the XF achieved significant engineering milestones. The body was optimized using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) before ever reaching a wind tunnel, influencing everything from the shape of the exterior mirrors to the high, squarer tail designed for aerodynamic efficiency. This focus on performance was validated in 2008 when a modified XFR shattered the Jaguar speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats, reaching 225.675 mph—surpassing a record held by the XJ220 since 1992.
The XF also served as a pioneer for luxury tech and versatility. It introduced the 'JaguarDrive Selector,' a rotating gearshift dial that elevates from the console, and featured a 'Sportbrake' estate with a loading capacity of 1,675 litres, which outperformed contemporary rivals from BMW, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz. Its critical success was cemented by a dominant run in the 'What Car?' awards, where it secured the Best Executive Car title for four consecutive years between 2008 and 2011.
