The mystery of the 'Super Light' name lasted over sixty years
In short: For decades, the meaning of the Mercedes-Benz SL designation was a subject of corporate debate. Was it 'Sport Leicht' or 'Super Leicht'? The truth remained buried in archives until a chance discovery finally settled a sixty-year-old linguistic mystery for one of the world's most iconic grand tourers.
The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, a staple of luxury performance since 1954, carries a name that was historically ambiguous. While the German word 'Leicht' translates to 'light' in terms of weight or effort, the prefix was contested for generations. Some engineers, including those who worked with Rudolf Uhlenhaut, argued the 'SL' stood for 'Sport Leicht' (Sport Light). However, a 2012 special edition by Auto Motor und Sport cited a notarized letter from Uhlenhaut claiming it meant 'Super Leicht' (Super Light).
The confusion persisted until 2017, when a chance discovery in the corporate archives provided the definitive answer: the abbreviation officially stood for 'Super Leicht'. This clarification came after decades of the company using both terms interchangeably. Interestingly, the first 300 SL was originally a racing car built in 1952 with no intention of becoming a street vehicle; it only entered the consumer market in 1954 following a suggestion from American importer Max Hoffman to target wealthy performance enthusiasts.
The evolution of the SL-Class reflects a balance between weight and technological luxury. From the 1954 coupé with its iconic gullwing doors to the R129, which introduced the first hydraulically operated fabric convertible top and an automatic rollbar in 1989, the lineage has prioritized engineering milestones. Even the latest R232 generation, launched in 2021 as an AMG-only model, maintains this heritage by reverting to a soft fabric roof rather than the heavier retractable hardtops of previous generations.
