Nothing's new design marks a departure from its transparent roots
In short: For years, Nothing defined itself by the see-through aesthetic of its hardware. With the release of the Phone (4a) and (4a) Pro in March 2026, that signature transparency is being traded for different materials and more specialized camera tech.
The launch of the Nothing Phone (4a) series represents a pivot in the brand's design language. While the standard Phone (4a) maintains the traditional polycarbonate frame and glass back, the high-end (4a) Pro introduces a solid aircraft-grade aluminium unibody. In this new model, only the camera island retains the see-through look that made previous iterations famous, signaling a shift toward more premium materials for their flagship offerings.
Technically, the two models diverge significantly in imaging and display performance. The Phone (4a) Pro is positioned as the superior experience, featuring a Sony LYT700C sensor capable of 140x digital zoom. In contrast, the standard Phone (4a) uses a Samsung ISOCELL GN9 sensor limited to 70x digital zoom. Even their displays differ slightly: the Pro model offers a larger 6.83-inch screen with a higher 144 Hz refresh rate, while the standard model sits at 6.78 inches with a 120 Hz limit.
Despite these hardware splits, both devices share core infrastructure and long-term support. They run on Nothing OS 4.1 (based on Android 16) and promise a substantial software lifecycle of three major Android upgrades and six years of security updates. Equipped with 50W rapid power delivery and 7.5-watt reverse wired capabilities, neither handset includes wireless options; instead, they utilize Gorilla Glass 7i to prevent surface scuffs.
Battery capacities vary by region rather than model; international versions of both phones house 5,080 mAh batteries, while India-specific models are equipped with larger 5,400 mAh units. This tiered approach allows Nothing to balance high-end specs like the Pro's periscope telephoto capabilities with more accessible hardware for the standard (4a) variant.
