Pumped hydro remains the dominant solution for large-scale renewable energy storage
In short: A review of current energy technologies found that pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) still accounts for nearly all global storage capacity. While batteries are becoming more competitive for short-term needs, like powering electric vehicles or balancing minutes of demand, PHES remains the most cost-effective method for storing massive amounts of electricity over several days.
The study highlights a shift toward closed-loop systems that move water between two reservoirs away from rivers. This approach aims to reduce environmental impact while capturing the vast storage potential needed to balance variable wind and solar power. However, as this is a review paper, it summarizes existing technology rather than providing new experimental data.
Why it matters: While batteries handle quick bursts of energy, pumped hydro is the backbone for storing enough renewable power to run a grid.
