Can engineering unlock the secret to the perfect rock skip?
Using a custom-built robot named Skippa, Mark Rober explores the physics behind a successful skip. This video breaks down the precise mechanical variables required to make a stone dance across the water's surface.
The experiment identifies four critical factors for success. To achieve the ideal skip, the rock should be launched at a 20-degree angle, while its flight path should also maintain a 20-degree inclination. Beyond trajectory, maximizing the rock's spin is essential for stability.
The physical properties of the stone are equally vital. The most effective rocks feature a flat underside and possess enough mass to provide momentum, provided they are not so heavy that they reduce the thrower's maximum arm speed.
