Why business leaders must move beyond ESG to solve global crises

In short: Current corporate efforts like ESG often lack the depth required for real impact. As geopolitical tensions rise and climate change reshapes industries, experts argue that leaders need a profound mindset shift—moving from superficial talk to transformative action that addresses the root causes of our most intractable societal challenges.

For decades, global leaders have relied on voluntary measures and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) frameworks to address systemic issues. However, critics argue these initiatives are often inadequate, characterized by more talk than action. For instance, voluntary efforts to reduce carbon emissions remain patchy, and many global supply chains have yet to undergo the restructuring necessary to meet modern challenges.

The scale of the challenge is unprecedented. Beyond the energy transition driven by climate science, leaders face growing geopolitical divisions—such as those between China and the West—that threaten global economic linkages. Additionally, the rapid rise of technologies like AI and robotics, alongside the erosion of democratic support in Western nations, creates a landscape of significant social and political strain.

Addressing these issues requires more than just technological fixes; it requires a fundamental paradigm shift. While technological solutions like blockchain-supported food delivery for refugees or machines that fortify flour in Africa show promise, experts suggest we must also address the 'inner' mindset from which these emergencies arise. This involves moving toward relational modes of knowing, being, and acting to foster better collaboration.

While a mindset shift is beginning to emerge across various sectors, a collective paradigm shift has not yet occurred at the systems level. To bridge this gap, decision-makers may need to develop transformative skills and utilize experimental 'safe spaces' to navigate the transition toward a more sustainable and stable global operating context.
