Why radical leadership is the only way to avoid climate disaster

In short: For decades, business success was measured solely by shareholder value. But as the climate crisis intensifies, Jim Snabe argues that true leadership requires a leap of faith. Can the world's largest industries transform themselves when the technology to do so doesn't even exist yet?

Jim Snabe, chairman of the Danish shipping giant Maersk and the engineering firm Siemens, suggests that the era of prioritizing only shareholder value must evolve. To avoid a climate disaster, Snabe argues that companies need much more radical leadership. This shift is not merely about making promises; it is about the speed of implementation. While many corporations have set ambitious carbon neutrality targets, Snabe expresses concern that the pace of change is not yet sufficient to meet the scale of the crisis.

The challenge of decarbonizing heavy industry is immense. For instance, attempting to power a large shipping vessel entirely with electricity would require batteries that occupy 60 per cent of the ship's capacity. When Maersk committed to zero carbon shipping by 2050, they lacked a proven business case or existing technology. However, this 'leap of faith' eventually led to the discovery of Power-to-X solutions. Within two years of the commitment, a solution was found, and one year after that, the first vessel was ordered—placing the company seven years ahead of an initially impossible timeline.

Critics often hesitate due to the 'green premium'—the higher cost of new, sustainable technologies. Snabe contends that while initial costs are higher, scaling these technologies makes them dramatically cheaper. He views the transition to sustainability as the modern equivalent of the fossil fuel revolution: those who establish the new foundation of the global value chain will define the next era of wealth and industry. This movement is supported by initiatives like the TED Future Forum, which focuses on the role of business in accelerating climate solutions.
