The Beetle's final act was a calculated move away from its past
In short: Volkswagen didn't just want to build a new Beetle; they wanted to distance the car from the commercial failure of its predecessor. By launching the A5 model in 2011, the brand traded the New Beetle's legacy for a more aggressive, lower profile that still paid homage to the original Type 1.
The 2011 Volkswagen Beetle (A5) was a strategic pivot. While it retained the iconic silhouette of the original Type 1 Beetle, it was designed to be more aggressive and lower than the New Beetle produced between 1997 and 2011. This previous generation had failed to achieve the legendary success of the original, prompting Volkswagen to seek a more distinct identity. The A5 model was built on the PQ35 platform, which it shared with the Jetta and Golf Variant at the plant in Puebla, Mexico.
Technically, the A5 was a significant expansion of the Beetle's capabilities. It was 4,278 mm long, 88 mm wider, and 12 mm lower than the previous model, while nearly doubling the trunk space from 209 L to 310 L. Under the hood, it offered a variety of powertrains, including 1.2-litre to 2.0-litre petrol engines and 1.6-litre to 2.0-litre diesel options. In North America, it initially featured a 2.5L straight-five engine before transitioning to a 1.8L four-cylinder TSI in 2015 to improve torque.
The model's lifecycle was marked by diverse lifestyle variants, from the off-road 'Beetle Dune' to the 'Beetle Coast,' a convertible designed to compete with mainstream sedans like the Honda Civic. It even featured high-profile collaborations, such as a Fender Musical Instruments edition with a sunburst dashboard and an Xbox special edition for the Mexican market. Production finally concluded in July 2019, with the 'Final Edition' serving as a tribute to the car's history through specific heritage colors like Safari Uni Beige and Stonewashed Blue.
The Beetle's journey from a compact car to a lifestyle icon was cemented by unique marketing stunts, such as Oprah Winfrey giving away keys to the audience in 2010 and a global reveal partnered with MTV across three continents. By the time the final denim blue coupe finished production on July 9, 2019, the A5 had successfully bridged the gap between nostalgic design and modern engineering.
