Is the era of the paper passport coming to an end?

Karoli Hindriks: Why the passport needs an upgrade · 9:58 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: While we rely on physical booklets to cross borders, a digital revolution is brewing. From advanced holographic security in the UK to visions of a borderless digital future, the way we prove our identity is undergoing a fundamental transformation.

The traditional paper passport is currently undergoing a significant redesign in the United Kingdom. Starting in December, new British passports will feature the Coat of Arms of His Majesty King Charles III. This updated design, the first entirely new version since 2020, aims to balance national heritage with unprecedented security. The new booklets will showcase four UNESCO-protected landscapes: the Giant’s Causeway, Three Cliffs Bay, the Lake District, and Ben Nevis. This redesign is part of a broader government strategy known as the Plan for Change. By integrating these iconic natural landmarks, the Passport Office aims to celebrate the nation's heritage while modernizing its identity.

To combat forgery and illegal entry, the UK is implementing advanced anti-forgery technology. This includes translucent elements and cutting-edge holographics, alongside existing features like UV-visible patterns and complex, difficult-to-replicate designs. This evolution of security has been a long process; while the first modern-style British passport appeared in 1915, it wasn't until 1972 that the first watermark was introduced as a security measure. The efficiency of the current system remains high, with the Passport Office processing 3.8 million documents in the first half of 2025. Notably, 99.7% of straightforward applications were completed within a three-week window, exceeding the 98.5% target.

However, some visionaries believe physical documents are merely a stepping stone. Entrepreneur Karoli Hindriks suggests that the true future lies in a digital upgrade. Drawing inspiration from Estonia's tech-driven governance, Hindriks envisions universal digital passports that eliminate the bureaucratic friction and repetitive processes inherent in current systems. Such a shift could move us toward a world where travel is no longer hindered by the limitations of paper-based borders. This digital vision seeks to replace outdated, expensive systems that currently drain both time and financial resources. The goal is a seamless transition to a world where identity verification is instantaneous and borderless.
