A mid-air collision over Rio de Janeiro claims the lives of six individuals
In short: On June 14, 2026, two helicopters collided above a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tragic accident resulted in the deaths of six people, including American musician Oliver Tree and several prominent Argentine and Brazilian creators. The event triggered immediate investigations into aviation safety and local regulatory transparency.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:59 a.m. Brasília time in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood. The aircraft involved were a 2012 Eurocopter HB350 B Esquilo and a 1999 Bell 206B JetRanger III. The Bell helicopter, operated by RG8 Aviation and registered to a fruit trading firm, carried five people: pilot Alexandre Souza, producer Lucas Frota, director Lucas A. Vignale, YouTuber Gaspi, and Oliver Tree. The Eurocopter carried only its pilot, Charles Marsillac. Both helicopters had departed from separate locations in compliance with flight regulations before the impact occurred above an abandoned church site.
The aftermath was severe, with the Bell helicopter exploding upon impact and igniting a fire that damaged approximately 20 vehicles parked nearby. Debris was scattered across a 100-meter radius, with parts of the fuselage landing on the roof of a neighboring building. Emergency response teams, including 45 military personnel and 15 vehicles, worked to control the blaze and secure the site. While five victims were identified shortly after the crash, the remains of Oliver Tree required dental analysis, which was finalized on June 16, to confirm his identity.
The investigation is currently being led by the Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center of the Brazilian Air Force, alongside the National Civil Aviation Agency. Authorities are examining potential causes, with police investigator Alan Luxardo noting that human error remains a possibility. The incident has also prompted legislative action; state deputy Claudio Caiado has proposed a bill aimed at increasing transparency and monitoring for air operations within Rio de Janeiro. The tragedy has resonated globally, drawing tributes from artists and creators across the Americas who mourned the loss of the passengers and crew.
