A century-old rifle round that still outpaces modern expectations
In short: In an era of rapid technological turnover, the 7.5×55mm Swiss cartridge remains a masterclass in ballistic longevity. Developed over a century ago, it still maintains a remarkable effective range that rivals modern standards, proving that precision engineering can outlast the trends of the battlefield.
The 7.5×55mm Swiss, specifically the Gewehrpatrone 1911 (GP 11), was born from a lineage of Swiss military innovation. It evolved from the 1889 GP 90 round, which was one of the first to utilize copper-jacketed ammunition and smokeless powder. While the original 1889 design used paper-patched lead bullets to reduce fouling, the 1911 update introduced a significantly more powerful cartridge featuring a double-base powder—combining nitrocellulose with approximately 30% nitroglycerin—and a high-pressure operating chamber.
The GP 11 is defined by its innovative 11.3-gram boat tail spitzer bullet, featuring a lead-antimony core and a jacket of plated steel or tombac. This design achieved such aerodynamic efficiency that it retained supersonic velocity up to 800 meters. Even by 2023 standards, this 800-meter effective range is considered remarkable for a military round over 100 years old. Its influence was so profound that it prompted the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom to develop similar boat tail spitzer bullets to improve their own long-range performance during World War I.
Despite its age, the cartridge remains a staple of Swiss defense. It is still used in the MG 51 machine gun mounted on the Leopard 2 tank and the MOWAG Eagle reconnaissance vehicle. While it is no longer the standard for all infantry, it remains in use by Swiss Army reservists and sport shooters. Interestingly, because Switzerland is not a C.I.P. member state, its unique proof testing standards—which differ from the international norms used by the rest of Europe—mean that Swiss-proofed GP 11 arms are not officially recognized in C.I.P. regulated countries.
