Cuba faces a humanitarian crisis as fuel supplies grind to a halt
In short: A nationwide blackout and a collapsing infrastructure have pushed Cuba into a desperate struggle. As the U.S. effectively chokes off oil shipments, everyday life has shifted from a struggle to make ends meet to a fight for basic survival, with food spoiling and trash piling in the streets.
Starting in early 2026, a U.S. fuel blockade has crippled Cuba's energy sector. The crisis was exacerbated by a U.S. intervention in Venezuela in January 2026, which ousted Nicolás Maduro and severed a primary source of subsidized oil. The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines issued a warning by mid-May 2026 regarding a total depletion of diesel and oil within the nation. This has led to a 'cascade effect' where the lack of fuel prevents trash collection, halts transportation, and causes widespread power outages that can last for days in rural areas. The human cost is severe. In Havana, residents face rolling blackouts that cause food to spoil and disrupt water pumping, which often only occurs every other or third day. Outside the capital, the situation is described as more dire, with some towns losing power for multiple days at a time. The lack of electricity in hospitals means doctors may have to use cellphone lights for surgeries, while a waiting list of approximately 100,000 people for procedures grows as generators run dry. Inflation is described as out of control, pushing many citizens well below the poverty line. Politically, the situation is complex. While the U.S. has signaled a desire for regime change by the end of 2026, Cuban officials have confirmed they are engaged in diplomatic talks to address the blockade. These negotiations led to the release of over 2,000 prisoners in April 2026. However, many Cubans remain caught between the fear of a U.S. 'takeover'—recalling memories of the island being a 'plaything'—and frustration with their own government's inability to open the economy to private industry.
