How the United States Air Force uses alphanumeric strings to define every single job
In short: Every role in the United States Air Force is identified by a specific alphanumeric string known as an Air Force Specialty Code. These codes act as a precise shorthand for an airman's career field, level of expertise, and specialized qualifications, ensuring that personnel management remains organized across the entire military branch.
The Air Force Specialty Code, or AFSC, serves as the primary system for identifying job requirements and individual qualifications. While officers are assigned four-character codes, enlisted personnel receive five-character identifiers. This system functions similarly to the military occupational specialty codes used by the Army and Marine Corps, or the rating and designator systems employed by the Navy and Coast Guard. The Space Force utilizes a parallel structure known as the Space Force Specialty Code.
Following the Air Force’s independence from the Army in 1947, the service initially adopted the Army’s occupational coding system before revising it in 1950. A major transformation occurred in October 1993 under the leadership of Merrill McPeak. This restructuring aimed to align job categories with a force-wide reorganization, significantly consolidating the number of available specialties. The total count of officer roles was reduced from over two hundred to roughly one hundred twenty, while enlisted specialties were trimmed from over two hundred to fewer than one hundred eighty.
For enlisted personnel, the five-character code provides a detailed breakdown of their professional standing. The first few characters identify the career field, while the fourth digit indicates the skill level, ranging from a recruit in technical school to a chief enlisted manager responsible for broad policy. Additional prefixes or suffixes can be appended to these codes to denote specific system designators or unique abilities. For example, an aircrew-qualified cryptologic linguist specializing in Afrikaans would carry a complex code reflecting both their core role and these specific modifiers.
