In short: After World War II, the U.S. Army and Navy pushed to dismantle the Marine Corps entirely, seeking to absorb its missions into a larger structure. It took a decorated combat hero, who once faced dismissal for poor conduct, to stand before the Senate and argue that a specialized force was indispensable.

Alexander Vandegrift's path to leadership was far from linear. In 1909, his first evaluation as a second lieutenant was a stinging "Not Good," with superiors noting he had not shown an appreciation for his responsibilities. He spent the next several decades refining his career through diverse assignments, including the bombardment of Coyotepe Fortress in Nicaragua, the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico, and service in the Haitian Constabulary. By the time he reached high command, he had transformed from a struggling junior officer into a seasoned strategist.

During World War II, Vandegrift commanded the 1st Marine Division during the Battle of Guadalcanal. For his leadership during the Solomon Islands campaign between August 7 and December 9, 1942, he received both the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor. His success in securing a valuable base for further operations against Japanese forces cemented his reputation. By April 1945, he attained the rank of four-star general. He was the initial serving U.S. Marine to reach this grade.

The most critical moment of his career, however, was political rather than kinetic. As the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps, he faced a movement led by President Harry S. Truman and General Dwight D. Eisenhower to disband the Corps. In 1946, Vandegrift delivered the "Bended Knee Speech" to the Senate Committee on Naval Affairs. He argued that the Marines had earned their right to exist through 170 years of service and warned against the "subjugation to the status of uselessness" planned by the War Department. His testimony successfully swayed Congress, ensuring the Corps' survival.
