The Fury drone is designed to fly alongside human pilots as a loyal wingman
In short: The United States Air Force is integrating a new breed of unmanned fighter into its fleet. Known as the FQ-44 Fury, this autonomous aircraft is built to support human-crewed jets in air-to-air combat. By providing affordable mass, it allows commanders to take risks that would be impossible with traditional fighters.
The FQ-44 Fury represents a shift in aerial warfare strategy, moving toward manned-unmanned teaming. Originally developed by Blue Force Technologies as a platform to simulate high-end threats under the name Grackle, the design was later acquired by Anduril Industries in 2023. It was subsequently adapted for the Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, where it emerged as a winning design alongside the General Atomics YFQ-42.
Physically, the Fury is a compact fighter-like drone, measuring roughly half the size of an F-16. It features a single Williams FJ44-4M turbofan engine capable of generating 4,000 pounds-force of thrust. The aircraft is engineered for high-performance maneuvers, capable of pulling up to 9 g and reaching speeds of Mach 0.95 at altitudes up to 50,000 feet. Its external hardpoints allow for a versatile payload, including air-to-air missiles and precision-guided bombs, designed to augment the capabilities of advanced crewed aircraft like the F-15EX, F-22, and F-35.
While the aircraft is not strictly classified as attritable, its relatively low cost provides the military with greater tactical flexibility. Following a successful first flight on October 31, 2025, the program moved toward production. In June 2026, the Air Force announced a contract to build a combined total of 150 Fury and YFQ-42 units by 2030. This deployment marks a significant step in integrating autonomous systems into the core of modern air power, ensuring that the Air Force maintains a numerical and technological edge in contested environments.
