The high-stakes gamble of turning a narrative studio into a live-service giant
In short: BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, attempted to pivot from cinematic storytelling to a persistent, live-service model with Anthem. It was pitched as the future of the medium, but it became a cautionary tale of what happens when a studio's core identity is traded for a recurring revenue stream.
Development of Anthem began in 2012 under Casey Hudson, who pitched the project to Electronic Arts as a radical departure from the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. The goal was to create a live-service game with monetary returns comparable to the FIFA series. Internally, the project was codenamed "Dylan," a nod to Bob Dylan, while its working title until 2017 was Beyond. Despite Hudson's pitch of "the future of storytelling," former producer Mark Darrah noted that the studio lacked a firm grasp on what that actually meant at the start.
The core concept was a mission-driven survival game set on the planet Coda. Players would pilot robotics-enhanced exosuits called Javelins to navigate a world that functioned like a Bermuda Triangle, attracting hazards and dangerous creatures. The original vision presented at the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo emphasized cooperative play and shared stories over the "loot shooter" mechanics that would later define the experience. The primary challenge was scaling this vision technically within the Frostbite engine.
Despite reaching over 5 million lifetime sales, Anthem failed to meet commercial expectations and received mixed reviews for its gameplay and story. BioWare announced a plan to reinvent the core gameplay in February 2020, but all future development ceased by February 2021. The game's servers were officially shut down on January 12, 2026, ending the era of the Freelancers.
The narrative world of Coda is defined by the Anthem of Creation, a mysterious force that powers advanced technology and causes "Cataclysms"—events that can terraform the planet or spawn monstrous creatures. This environment was populated by various factions, including the Sentinels, Corvus, and the Cyphers, who possess psychic gifts. The game's central conflict involves the Dominion, an authoritarian group seeking to control the Anthem by activating a relic called the Cenotaph.
