How waves of migration reshaped the Maghreb's identity
In short: Beyond simple conquest, the Maghreb was transformed by centuries of movement. From 7th-century armies to 11th-century Bedouin tribes fleeing drought, these migrations didn't just redraw borders—they fundamentally altered the language, religion, and social fabric of North Africa.
The Arab presence in the Maghrypt began in earnest after the conquest of Egypt in 642. Initially, Arab forces raided Berber territories, and by 705, the region had become a province of the Umayyad caliphate. While early movements were driven by military objectives—such as protecting Egypt from Byzantine attacks—later waves were motivated by instability in the Mashriq. For instance, severe drought, plague, and economic crises in Egypt prompted Bedouin tribes like the Banu Hilal and Banu Sulaym to move westward during the 11th century.
These migrations created a complex mosaic of new states. The Rustamid state, founded by the Persian-born ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Rustam in the late 770s, flourished as a cosmopolitan trade hub in modern-day Algeria. Meanwhile, the Idrīsid state in Morocco was established through the invitation of ʿIsḥāq ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, who sought to give his rule a religious Islamic character by bringing in ʿIdrīs ibn ʿAbd Allāh. The arrival of Arab refugees from Spain and Aghlabid territories eventually gave the Idrīsid state a distinctly Arab character.
The long-term impact was a profound ethno-socio-linguistic transformation. While genetic studies indicate high continuity with pre-Arab populations, the indigenous Berber (Amazigh) populations underwent significant Arabization, adopting the Arabic language and culture. This process was reinforced by the expansion of trans-Saharan trade and the settlement of nomadic groups encouraged by local dynasties. Even as political powers like the Fatimids eventually conquered these various principalities in 909, the cultural and religious shifts remained durable.
