The rifle as a tool for redefining gender and duty
In short: In the hands of a modern soldier, a rifle is more than a weapon; it is a site of cultural negotiation. While the Automatkarbin 5 serves as a practical tool for subarctic survival, it also functions as a symbol used to challenge and reshape traditional gender stereotypes.
Since 1986, the Swedish Armed Forces have utilised the Automatkarbin 5 (Ak 5) as their primary service rifle. It was developed as a license-built version of the Belgian FN FNC, specifically modified to withstand Sweden's harsh subarctic climate. Key modifications included a larger trigger guard and cocking handle to accommodate winter gloves in temperatures as low as -30 °C, a corrosion-resistant green finish, and a unique flash suppressor designed to handle Swedish blank ammunition by crushing wooden plugs into sawdust.
Beyond its mechanical specifications, the rifle serves as a focal point for sociological study. Research into the self-presentation of women in the Swedish defense forces highlights how these individuals use the rifle to navigate complex gender roles. By posing with an automatic carbine while maintaining traditional feminine aesthetics, these women create a collision between opposing stereotypes. They are not necessarily dismantling the image of femininity, but rather offering an alternative image of a 'warrior' that claims the role without conforming to male-coded military expectations.
This visual performance on platforms like Instagram allows women to assert their right to full citizenship—often defined by the promise of duty and the willingness to defend one's country. By controlling their own image as 'image producers,' they use the rifle to communicate that the military profession is equally accessible to all genders. Ultimately, the weapon becomes a tool to redefine the 'warrior' identity, moving it away from a strictly male-coded construct toward a more inclusive, gender-neutral standard of service.
In practical application, the Ak 5 is the standard-issue weapon for various roles, including medical personnel. Swedish medics are expected to provide qualified care in any terrain and threat level, necessitating the Ak 5 to protect both themselves and their patients. However, ongoing evaluations suggest that while the Ak 5 remains the standard, other systems like Personal Defence Weapons (PDW) are being researched to see if they better suit specific medical group roles.
