The Swedish 'Unity Vehicle' designed for the subarctic battlefield
In short: Born from an air force concept, the Combat Vehicle 90 was engineered to master the Nordic frost. This versatile platform has evolved from a simple infantry carrier into a highly digitized, multi-role powerhouse capable of navigating deep snow, wetlands, and the complex demands of modern electronic warfare.
Created by Bofors, Hägglund & Söner, and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration between the mid-1980s and early 1990s, the CV90 addressed Cold War needs for increased survivability and mobility. Originally designed for the Nordic subarctic climate, the vehicle's chassis provides exceptional movement through snow and wetlands, supporting up to eight fully equipped soldiers in its early configurations. The project group finalised this design in 1985 to meet specific Swedish Army requirements. Early prototypes for the 9025 and 9040 models were tested extensively between 1988 and 1991.
The platform has undergone significant technological shifts, evolving from the Mk 0 to the current Mk IV. While the original Swedish version utilized a 40 mm Bofors autocannon, export models often feature 30 mm or 35 mm Bushmaster autocannons. As combat requirements shifted, the vehicle's weight increased from 23 tonnes to 35 tonnes to accommodate enhanced protection and payload, though advanced suspension systems have helped maintain a consistent power-to-weight ratio. The Mk I variant successfully won international competitions against the American M2 Bradley and British Warrior. Additionally, the Swiss Mk II variant features a taller hull to accommodate specific combat compartment needs.
Modern iterations like the Mk IV represent a leap in digital integration, featuring the iFighting augmented reality system to prioritize critical battlefield data. This generation also introduces a 1,000 horsepower Scania engine and is the first Western infantry fighting vehicle to qualify for an Active Protection System. Looking forward, Swedish development goals for the 2023–2027 period include exploring hybrid-electric propulsion and advanced signature management to extend the vehicle's service life beyond 2034. The latest Scania-powered Mk IV weighs approximately 37 tonnes and includes an upgraded X300 transmission. Future upgrades may also incorporate Beyond Line Of Sight anti-tank guided missiles like the Akeron MP.
