Does a medieval basilica in Bruges truly house the blood of Jesus Christ?
In short: The Basilica of the Holy Blood in Belgium is famous for a phial said to contain the blood of Christ. While tradition links the relic to the Second Crusade, modern analysis suggests a different, more worldly origin for the vessel, challenging centuries of religious lore and local history.
The Basilica of the Holy Blood, located in the Burg square of Bruges, is a dual-chapel structure with a complex architectural history. The lower chapel, dedicated to St. Basil the Great, was built between 1134 and 1149 in the Romanesque style and remains largely unchanged. In contrast, the upper chapel, which houses the venerated relic, has undergone extensive transformations. Originally Romanesque, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the late 15th century and later renovated in the 19th century to achieve its current Gothic Revival aesthetic.
According to local tradition, Thierry of Alsace, Count of Flanders, brought the relic to Bruges in 1150 following his participation in the Second Crusade. The legend claims the phial was a gift from Baldwin III of Jerusalem. However, historical research casts doubt on this narrative, as there is no evidence of the relic in Bruges prior to the 1250s. Scholars suggest it is more likely that the phial arrived in the city following the 1204 sack of Constantinople by the army of Baldwin IX, Count of Flanders, during the Fourth Crusade.
Modern examination of the phial itself provides further insight. The vessel is a rock crystal bottle dating to the 11th or 12th century, identified as a Byzantine perfume container from the region of Constantinople. While the relic was once believed to liquefy miraculously every Friday, such claims have lacked consistent verification since the 14th century. Today, the phial remains a central element of the city's religious life, housed in a 1617 silver and gold reliquary, and continues to be displayed to the public on specific occasions throughout the year.
