In short: In early 1942, the Japanese military executed a lightning campaign to seize Java, the heart of the Netherlands East Indies. Despite a desperate Allied defense involving British, Australian, American, and Dutch forces, the island fell in less than two weeks, leading to the surrender of over 82,000 personnel.

The invasion of Java, known as Operation J, began in earnest on 28 February 1942. Japanese forces, commanded by Lieutenant General Hitoshi Imamura, utilized a two-pronged strategy. A western invasion force departed Cam Ranh Bay with 56 transports, while an eastern force sailed from Lingayen Gulf with 41 transports. These fleets were supported by the decisive victory at the Battle of the Java Sea on 27 February, where the Allied fleet suffered heavy losses, clearing the path for Japanese landings.

On 1 March, Japanese troops landed at three distinct points on the island. In the west, the 2nd Division landed near Merak and Eretan Wetan, aiming to split Allied forces between Batavia and Bandung. Simultaneously, the 48th Infantry Group landed in the east at Kragan. The Allied defense, led by Royal Netherlands East Indies Army commander General Hein ter Poorten, was hampered by fragmented command structures and a lack of critical equipment. Despite the efforts of units like the Australian 'Blackforce' and the U.S. 2nd Battalion of the 131st Field Artillery, the Japanese advance was relentless.

By 9 March, the situation had become untenable. Japanese forces had secured air superiority and broken through to the Bandung plateau, prompting Major General Jacob Pesman to announce that ceasefire negotiations were underway. The formal surrender followed on 12 March at Japanese headquarters in Bandung. The scale of the defeat was immense, with 82,618 Allied prisoners of war taken, including 66,219 from the Dutch East Indies forces, 10,626 British, 4,890 Australians, and 883 Americans. This rapid collapse effectively ended the final battle for the Netherlands East Indies.
