The 1984 Battle of Laoshan saw China and Vietnam clash in a massive artillery duel
In short: Fought between 1984 and 1992, the Battle of Laoshan was the largest engagement between China and Vietnam since their 1979 war. Driven by regional power struggles and shifting alliances, both nations poured massive resources into a brutal, high-altitude conflict that fundamentally reshaped modern Chinese military doctrine and artillery tactics.
The conflict originated from China's desire to pressure Vietnam, which was then engaged in the Cambodian–Vietnamese War. By 1983, China had pledged support to resistance forces fighting Vietnamese occupation in Cambodia. In April 1984, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched an offensive to capture Laoshan, a strategic 1,422-meter-high mountain range on the border. The Chinese objective was to force Vietnam to divert troops away from Cambodia and Thailand, while demonstrating that China would not tolerate territorial incursions.
The battle was defined by intense artillery warfare. During the initial April offensive, China utilized over 256 artillery pieces to bombard Vietnamese positions. The PLA later gained a critical advantage by deploying British-made Cymbeline radars, which allowed them to pinpoint and neutralize Vietnamese artillery batteries with precision. A robust logistics system, known as 'rear service,' ensured Chinese units were constantly supplied with over 120,000 shells, preventing the ammunition shortages that plagued the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN).
Vietnam launched its own major counteroffensive, the MB84 Campaign, in June and July 1984. Despite mobilizing 40,000 troops and launching a massive assault on 12 July, the PAVN failed to retake the hills. By the end of July, active fighting subsided into sporadic skirmishes. China maintained defensive positions on the captured heights until 1992, using the area as a training ground for various military regions. The conflict proved pivotal for the PLA, marking a transition from traditional mass-barrage tactics toward a more modern, precision-focused approach to warfare.
