How a Derailed Train and Homemade Bombs Ended the Cuban Revolution in Santa Clara
In late 1958, a decisive clash in Santa Clara shattered the regime of General Fulgencio Batista. Led by Che Guevara, rebel forces utilized tractors to sabotage an armored train, turning the tide of the Cuban Revolution. Within hours of the city's fall, the government collapsed, marking a historic turning point.
The Battle of Santa Clara, occurring in late December 1958, served as the final, decisive act of the Cuban Revolution. Rebel forces, commanded by Che Guevara, arrived at the city’s university on the outskirts of town at dusk. Guevara, despite having his arm in a sling from a previous injury, divided his 300 fighters into two columns to confront the government troops stationed there under Colonel Casillas Lumpuy.
A pivotal moment arrived when Guevara prioritized the capture of an armored train sent by Batista to reinforce his troops. Rebels used tractors from the university’s school of Agronomy to lift the railway tracks, successfully derailing the train as it retreated from Capiro hill. Guevara later described the train as a 'veritable oven' for the soldiers inside, who were forced out by a barrage of Molotov cocktails. The capture of the train, which held significant weaponry, demoralized the government forces and led to the surrender of 350 men and officers.
While Guevara’s column neutralized the train, a second rebel column led by Rolando Cubela besieged two major army garrisons within the city. Despite the government's use of tanks, aircraft, and snipers, the rebels were bolstered by local civilians who provided essential support, including more Molotov cocktails. The psychological impact of the train's capture, combined with rebel radio broadcasts, proved insurmountable for the regime. Although state-controlled newspapers initially attempted to claim a victory, the reality of the situation triggered a wave of surrenders across the country. By mid-afternoon, Che announced the final surrender of troops in Santa Clara. Within 12 hours of the city's capture, General Batista fled Cuba, and Fidel Castro’s forces secured total victory, effectively ending the revolution.
