Frederick the Great thought he lost his first major battle, but claimed victory anyway.
On October 1, 1756, Frederick the Great marched his Prussian army into a hidden Austrian trap at Lobositz. Despite suffering heavy casualties and fleeing the field in despair, Frederick later declared a win. The reality was a strategic stalemate that forced his retreat and proved the Austrians were no longer pushovers.
The Battle of Lobositz, the opening land engagement of the Seven Years' War, saw Frederick the Great’s 28,000 Prussians clash with 33,000 Austrians under Field Marshal von Browne. Frederick, having invaded Saxony against British advice, sought to establish a winter base in the Bohemian plain. Browne, however, anticipated this move and prepared a sophisticated ambush near the town of Lobositz, utilizing the terrain of the Mittel-Gebirge mountains and the marshy Morellenbach stream to conceal his forces.
Frederick’s initial assessment was that he faced only a small rear guard. This miscalculation led to two disastrous, uncoordinated cavalry charges that were repulsed by hidden Austrian batteries and fresh reserves. As the day wore on, the fighting intensified in the vineyards of the Lobosch hill, where Prussian infantry struggled to dislodge Austrian irregulars. The battle devolved into a brutal slog, with Prussian artillery eventually setting the town of Lobositz ablaze, trapping soldiers on both sides in the inferno.
By sunset, both armies had suffered roughly 2,900 casualties. Although Browne withdrew during the night to his base at Budin, he had successfully blocked Frederick’s advance, fulfilling his primary objective of covering a rescue mission for the Saxon army at Pirna. Frederick, shaken and convinced he had lost, was only persuaded otherwise by his subordinates. Ultimately, the battle forced Frederick to abandon his Bohemian campaign and retreat to Saxony within two weeks, marking a strategic victory for the Austrians who had successfully halted the Prussian momentum.
