How a tiny British garrison held off thousands of Zulu warriors at Rorke's Drift
After the catastrophic defeat at Isandlwana in 1879, a small British supply depot faced an onslaught by 4,000 Zulu warriors. With fewer than 160 men, the garrison transformed a mission station into a fortress, fighting through the night in a desperate, legendary stand that earned a record number of Victoria Crosses.
On 22 January 1879, following the British defeat at Isandlwana, a Zulu force known as the Undi Corps—led by Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande—marched on the Rorke's Drift mission station. The garrison, commanded by Lieutenants John Chard and Gonville Bromhead, faced a critical choice: attempt a retreat while burdened with hospital patients or fortify their position. Guided by the advice of Assistant Commissary James Dalton, they chose to stand and fight, constructing a perimeter from mealie bags, biscuit boxes, and crates of tinned meat.
The battle began at 4:30 p.m. and lasted for over 12 hours. The Zulu warriors, armed primarily with shields and short spears known as the iklwa, launched repeated, piecemeal assaults. The fighting was brutal and close-quarters, particularly when the Zulus set fire to the hospital. Defenders were forced to hack holes through interior walls to evacuate patients, dragging them into the central yard as the building burned. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the British garrison repelled the attacks through the night, with the Zulu force finally withdrawing by dawn on 23 January.
The engagement resulted in 17 British deaths and 351 Zulu casualties, though estimates of the Zulu force size vary between 3,000 and 4,000. The defence of Rorke's Drift became a significant morale booster for the British after the disaster at Isandlwana, though it had little strategic impact on the broader Anglo-Zulu War, which continued until the Battle of Ulundi in July 1879. The bravery displayed by the defenders was formally recognised with 11 Victoria Crosses, the highest number ever awarded for a single battle.
