In short: In September 1862, a Union corporal stumbled upon a document that could have shattered the Confederate Army. This intelligence coup set the stage for the Battle of South Mountain, a pivotal clash of missed opportunities that ultimately paved the way for the bloodiest day in American history.

During the year 1862, on the 13th of September, a Union Major General named George B. McClellan was granted Special Order No. 191. This document, authored by Confederate General Robert E. Lee, detailed his troop movements and revealed that his army was dangerously divided. One wing, under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, was laying siege to Harper's Ferry, while the rest of the army remained at Boonsboro under Maj. Gen. James Longstreet. This 'greatest security leak' gave McClellan the chance to attack and defeat the scattered Confederate forces in detail.

McClellan moved the Army of the Potomac west to exploit this opening, leading to the Battle of South Mountain on September 14, 1862. The Union forces attacked three specific mountain passes: Crampton's, Turner's, and Fox's Gaps. To execute the maneuver, McClellan organized his army into three wings. The Right Wing, commanded by Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside, targeted Turner's and Fox's Gaps. The Left Wing, under Maj. Gen. William B. Franklin, moved toward Crampton's Gap. The Center Wing remained in reserve.

While the Union achieved a convincing tactical victory, the Confederate defenders successfully delayed the Union advance. This delay was strategically vital; it provided Lee with the necessary time to begin consolidating his scattered forces. Because of this delay, Lee was able to forestall a total defeat and continue his campaign, directly leading to the massive confrontation at the Battle of Antietam just a few days later. Historians often overlook South Mountain, treating it as a mere prelude to Antietam, despite its role in preventing the destruction of Lee's army.
