How a tactical error turned a demonstration into a decisive Union victory
In short: In November 1863, Union forces were trapped in a starving siege at Chattanooga. What began as a simple command to test Confederate strength spiraled into an unplanned, uphill charge that shattered an apparently impregnable line and forced a massive Confederate retreat.
The Battle of Missionary Ridge, fought on November 25, 1863, was the climax of the Chattanooga campaign. Following the Union victory at Lookout Mountain the previous day, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant sought to break the Confederate siege led by Gen. Braxton Bragg. The Union plan was fragmented: Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman was to attack the northern end at Tunnel Hill, while Maj. Gen. George Henry Thomas was initially ordered only to move forward as a demonstration to assist Sherman.
The engagement turned chaotic when Union soldiers, after pushing through the first Confederate rifle pits on the valley floor, found themselves under heavy fire from higher positions. Instead of stopping as ordered, the troops continued an unplanned ascent. This disorganized but effective surge caught the Confederates off guard. A critical error in the Confederate defense contributed to this: the top line of rifle pits was positioned on the actual crest rather than the military crest, creating fatal blind spots for the defenders.
While Sherman’s attack on the northern flank ended in a tactical failure and heavy casualties, the simultaneous pressure from Thomas’s center and Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker’s forces overwhelmed Bragg’s Army of Tennessee. The Confederate retreat to Dalton, Georgia, ended the siege of Chattanooga. While some historians, like David Eicher, criticize Sherman’s 'needless attack,' others highlight the skill of Confederate leaders like Patrick Cleburne in managing counterattacks during the intense fighting.
