In short: Before he was a UFC champion, Benson Henderson was a high school wrestler and a black belt in traditional Korean martial arts. His journey from the wrestling mats of Nebraska to the top of the lightweight division highlights a unique fusion of disciplines that defined a legendary career.

Benson Henderson's martial arts foundation was deeply rooted in his family heritage. His mother, Song-Hwa, insisted he and his brother study Tae Kwon Do starting when he was about nine years old to connect with their Korean culture. This training resulted in both brothers attaining black belts. This traditional background provided a distinct stylistic layer to his fighting repertoire, which would later be combined with high-level wrestling.

Henderson's path to the elite level was paved in the wrestling pits of the Midwest. He competed for Decatur High School and later attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. During his college years, he was named an NAIA All-American twice and reached the national finals in 2005 and 2006. This grappling pedigree became a cornerstone of his professional success, allowing him to dominate opponents in the UFC and WEC.

Henderson's career is marked by significant milestones, including becoming a UFC Lightweight Champion in 2012 after defeating Frankie Edgar. He is tied with legends like B.J. Penn and Khabib Nurmagomedov for the second-most title defenses in the lightweight division. His career has been defined by high-stakes battles, including a 2009 'Fight of the Year' against Donald Cerrone and a controversial 2015 loss to Cerrone where 12 of 14 media outlets scored the bout in his favor.

Even after losing his title to Anthony Pettis in 2013, Henderson remained a top-tier competitor, moving between weight classes and eventually signing a long-term exclusive contract with Bellator MMA in late 2018. His ability to adapt across different promotions and weight classes cements his status as one of the greatest lightweights in the history of the sport.
