In short: Gilbert Burns didn't start in a high-tech gym or a wealthy training camp. His journey began with severe asthma and a discarded gi found in a car trunk, eventually leading him to become one of the most respected submission grapplers in modern mixed martial arts.

Born in Niterói, Brazil, Gilbert Burns' path to professional fighting was shaped by medical necessity. As a child, he and his brother Herbert suffered from severe asthmatic bronchitis. To manage the condition, they began practicing sports at age four, starting with karate sessions in their own backyard. Their definitive shift to Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) occurred in 1998 when they discovered a gi in a car belonging to a coach named Luiz Carlos.

In exchange for repairing car seats, the brothers received three months of free BJJ lessons. Burns' rise was marked by significant financial and physical hurdles. While his older brother Frederick left competitive sports early to support the family, Gilbert persisted despite struggling to pay rent and facing recurring bronchitis attacks in the countryside of Rio Claro. He eventually traded his college studies in Physical Education for a full-time competitive career.

His nickname, "Durinho" (Little Tough Guy), was bestowed by veteran Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro, who noted Burns' remarkable toughness during sparring sessions at the Nova União headquarters. After achieving international acclaim—including winning the 2011 World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships and a bronze medal at the ADCC in 2015—Burns transitioned to mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2012. He became a staple of the UFC, known for his submission prowess and resilience. His career highlights include earning four Performance of the Night awards and challenging for the UFC Welterweight Championship against Kamaru Usman in February 2021. Despite a loss in that title bout, he remains a prominent figure in the sport, recently securing a victory over Horlando Monteiro in June 2026.
