In short: The Ebony Blade is not just a weapon; it is a sentient curse. Forged from a meteorite and enchanted by Merlin, it thrives on the negative traits of its wielders. To the unworthy, it is a source of devastating power; to the truly chivalrous, its edge simply dulls.

The lineage of the Black Knight dates back to the 6th century, beginning with Sir Percy of Scandia. A legendary warrior at the court of King Arthur, Percy was recruited by the wizard Merlin to adopt a secret identity. He wielded the Ebony Blade, a weapon so powerful that eight knights had carried it before him. Each previous wielder was driven to madness by the sword's influence and had to be killed, until it was determined that only three specific individuals could bear its burden.

The blade's mechanics are rooted in a blood curse. It was enchanted by Merlin but became afflicted after being used for violence, specifically by the blood spilled by the original Black Knight. This curse allows the sword to absorb souls to empower itself and grant its wielder a form of resurrective immortality, provided a blood offering is made. However, the symbiote god Knull revealed that the blade's true power relies on this curse; it maximizes its strength by feeding on the 'negative proclivities' of flawed and imperfect humans.

The history of the mantle is one of tragic inheritance. Professor Nathan Garrett, a descendant of Sir Percy, was deemed unworthy by the sword's ghost and turned to crime, using modern technology to mimic medieval weaponry. His nephew, Dane Whitman, eventually took up the mantle as a hero. While Whitman managed to purge the curse once at the behest of Doctor Strange, the blade's nature remains volatile. It has been shown to turn Whitman into stone, amplify the powers of villains, and grant physical prowess to others, proving that the sword's edge is always sharpest for those with the most to lose.

The burden of the Black Knight is a recurring cycle of sacrifice. In the Marvel Universe, the blade has passed through various hands, including a Vatican knight named Augustine du Lac and even a teenage villain. Each iteration highlights the same central conflict: the sword offers incredible capabilities—such as cutting through almost any physical substance—but demands a psychological and spiritual toll that often mirrors the internal failings of the person holding it.
