In short: Designed for Russia's airborne troops, the BMD-4 is an exceptionally light infantry fighting vehicle. Despite its size, it packs a sophisticated Bakhcha-U turret capable of engaging everything from infantry to armored targets, even while moving through water or being airdropped.

The BMD-4, developed by the Volgograd tractor factory and Kurganmashzavod, entered service in late 2004. It was designed to provide the Russian Airborne Troops (VDV) with enhanced mobility and protection. While the chassis shares a basis with the BMD-3, the BMD-4 introduces a significant leap in armament via the Bakhcha-U turret. This module features a 100 mm 2A70 rifled gun, a 30 mm 2A72 autocannon, and a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun, allowing it to engage a wide variety of targets. The 2A70 rifled cannon can launch laser-guided anti-tank missiles. It also supports high explosive fragmentation rounds. This versatile armament is managed by an automated fire control system.

The vehicle's development has not been without controversy. In 2012, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov stated the BMD-4M did not meet military requirements and would not be purchased. However, VDV commander Vladimir Shamanov countered that the modernized BMD-4M was fully compliant with airborne needs. This tension highlights a common military dilemma: balancing the strict requirements of a central Ministry of Defense against the practical, operational needs of frontline troops.

To maintain its light weight for airdropping, the hull utilizes aluminum alloy rather than steel. This protection is sufficient to withstand 30 mm weapons from the front and small arms fire from the sides. The vehicle is highly versatile, capable of operating while stationary, mobile, or afloat. Its advanced fire control system provides hunter-killer capabilities, allowing the commander and gunner to operate the turret independently or via overrides. Six smoke grenade dischargers are mounted on the turret sides to counter infrared guidance. Additionally, an NBC protection system ensures crew survivability during nuclear fallout.
