In short: Unlike most infantry fighting vehicles, the Russian BMP-3 places its engine in the rear, forcing troops to enter over the power plant. This unique design choice, coupled with a massive 100 mm main gun, makes it one of the most heavily armed vehicles of its class currently in service.

Developed in the early 1980s and entering service in 1987, the BMP-3 represents a significant evolution in Soviet armored design. Its lineage traces back to the Obyekt 685 light tank prototype of 1975. The vehicle is manufactured by Kurganmashzavod, which has seen production output surge significantly since 2022 to meet operational demands. Throughout its serial production, the platform has undergone approximately 1,500 design amendments to improve performance and protection.

The vehicle's firepower is its most defining characteristic. The turret houses a 100 mm 2A70 rifled gun capable of firing conventional shells or 9M117 Bastion anti-tank guided missiles, alongside a 30 mm 2A72 autocannon and multiple machine guns. This armament allows the BMP-3 to engage targets at ranges up to 6,000 metres. Advanced fire control systems, such as the Belarusian Peleng or the Russian Sodema, ensure these weapons remain effective while stationary, moving, or even afloat.

Protection and versatility are central to the BMP-3's operational philosophy. The hull is constructed from high-strength aluminum alloy, with additional steel plating and spaced armor protecting the frontal arc. Modern variants incorporate explosive reactive armor (ERA) kits like Kaktus, as well as soft-kill systems like the Shtora-1 electro-optical jammer. Specialized versions exist for diverse roles, including the amphibious BMP-3F, the command-focused BMP-3K, and the reconnaissance-heavy BRM-3K, demonstrating the platform's adaptability across varied combat environments.
