The carrier that reached operational readiness in just one year
In short: While its predecessor took six years to reach basic deployment standards, China's Shandong aircraft carrier achieved initial operating capability in only one year. This rapid evolution from a secretive construction project to a dominant naval asset highlights a significant shift in maritime power dynamics.
The Shandong (Type 002) is China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, though its lineage is deeply rooted in Soviet engineering. Its design is a modified version of the Soviet Kuznetsov-class, featuring a ski-jump takeoff ramp and a propulsion system powered by eight steam turbines driven by conventional oil-fired boilers. Measuring approximately 305 meters in length with a displacement of about 55,000 metric tons, it serves as a successor to the Liaoning, which was itself derived from the partially-complete Soviet hull of the Varyag.
The vessel's development was marked by high levels of secrecy. Official acknowledgement from China regarding the vessel's presence only occurred once building progressed significantly during 2015. It was only in December 2015 that a defense ministry spokesman confirmed the ship was an aircraft carrier. Despite this late confirmation, the project moved with remarkable speed. Following its launch in April 2017, the carrier underwent roughly 19 months of sea trials, culminating in a final exercise in November 2019 that included a training mission in the South China Sea.
The Shandong's operational maturity is a key differentiator from the Liaoning. While the Liaoning was primarily used for training, the Shandong was designed for regular military service. It reached its initial operating capability (IOC) by October 2020, a feat that took its predecessor six years to accomplish after commissioning in 2012. Since then, it has participated in high-profile drills, including dual-carrier tactics with the Liaoning and maneuvers that have brought it within 24 nautical miles of the Taiwanese coast.
