In short: The Type 055 destroyer is more than just a modern warship; it is the result of a failed 1976 project that China couldn't build for nearly forty years. From technical bankruptcy to becoming a carrier escort, its journey reveals the massive industrial leap required to project blue-water power.

The Type 055 destroyer represents a significant shift in Chinese naval doctrine, moving toward large multi-mission surface combatants capable of 'blue-water' expeditionary missions. While China designates it as a destroyer, the United States classifies it as a cruiser because it possesses the flag facilities and capabilities similar to the U.S. Navy's Ticonderoga-class. Its primary roles include area air defense and advanced anti-submarine warfare, making it the centerpiece of Chinese aircraft carrier escort groups. However, this vessel was not an immediate success. A development program for a large destroyer began in 1976 but was scrapped in 1983. At that time, China faced 'insurmountable' industrial hurdles; they could neither manufacture the necessary gas turbine power plants domestically nor afford to import them.

It took decades of economic growth and technological advancement to overcome these barriers, leading to the first ship of the class, Nanchang, being launched in 2014 as the largest post-WWII warship launched in East Asia. Technologically, the Type 055 is a leap forward in stealth and sensor integration. It features an enclosed integrated mast and a continuous amidships structure designed to reduce its radar cross-section, noise, and infrared signature. It utilizes a sophisticated dual-band radar system with S-band and X-band panels that are significantly larger than those on previous Chinese destroyers. These sensors are reportedly capable of guiding anti-satellite missiles and managing entire battlegroups through integrated command-and-control systems.

The ship's offensive capabilities are defined by its 112 vertical launching system cells, which can handle various munitions including surface-to-air, land-attack cruise, and anti-ship missiles. Notably, Chinese state media reported the test launch of YJ-20 anti-ship ballistic missiles from this platform in December 2025. While it currently uses a combined gas and gas propulsion arrangement to reach speeds of about 30 knots, future iterations may require integrated electric propulsion to power high-energy weapons like lasers or railguns.
