In short: Cody, Wyoming, was not merely settled; it was engineered. Founded in 1896 by Buffalo Bill Cody, the town was meticulously planned to serve as a gateway to Yellowstone. Today, this small city balances its rugged Western heritage with the demands of hundreds of thousands of annual visitors seeking adventure.

The land surrounding Cody was historically home to the Shoshone and Crow people. Following the 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty, the area was designated as Crow territory, though later treaties in 1868 shifted regional boundaries. The site was first traversed by John Colter, a veteran of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, long before it became a formal town. Its modern identity began in 1896, when William F. Cody and his associate George T. Beck established the Shoshone Irrigation Company to lay out the townsite.

Buffalo Bill was deeply involved in the town's early development, personally overseeing infrastructure like street width and setting high liquor license fees to discourage undesirable elements. He invested heavily in the local economy, owning a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, a newspaper, and various mining and oil interests. To attract tourists traveling to Yellowstone National Park, he and Beck mapped a wagon route to the park's entrance. In 1902, he opened the Irma Hotel, which remains a historic landmark today.

The town's growth was cemented by the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1901, the same year Cody was incorporated. It later became the seat of Park County in 1909. While the local economy has evolved from early oil ventures—such as the Husky Oil Company—to a modern reliance on healthcare, retail, and tourism, the town maintains its identity as the self-proclaimed Rodeo Capital of the World. Today, it serves as a vital base for visitors, supported by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and the surrounding natural landscape.
