In short: William Frederick Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill, became one of the world's first global celebrities by dramatizing the American West. While his legendary status was built on real feats of endurance and scouting, much of his public image was carefully curated through fiction, stage shows, and strategic publicity.

Born in 1846 in Iowa, Cody’s life was defined by the volatility of the frontier. After his father was stabbed for his antislavery views in Kansas, young Cody began working at age 11 to support his family. He served as a Union soldier during the Civil War and later became a civilian scout for the U.S. Army, earning a reputation for his knowledge of the terrain and his courage during the Indian Wars.

Cody’s fame exploded after he met writer Ned Buntline in 1869, who turned Cody’s life into a series of largely invented adventures. This literary success led to the stage, and eventually to his massive touring spectacle, Buffalo Bill's Wild West. The show, which featured international performers and reenactments of frontier life, became an international institution, even catching the attention of Queen Victoria and Pope Leo XIII.

His legacy remains tied to controversy, particularly regarding his Medal of Honor. Awarded in 1872 for gallantry as a scout, the medal was rescinded in 1917 because he was a civilian, not a soldier. It was only after a 1989 legal effort by his relatives that the Army Board for Correction of Military Records restored the honor, amending his status to that of an enlisted soldier to align with the law.

While some of his exploits, such as his Pony Express service and his buffalo-hunting records, are debated by historians, his impact on the American cultural imagination is undeniable. From silent films to the influence of his show on 20th-century portrayals of the West, Buffalo Bill successfully transformed the raw, often violent reality of the frontier into a global brand.
