The tragic irony of a hero who could not save his home
In short: Connor is a fictional Mohawk protagonist navigating the American Revolution. Born into a lineage of Templar nobility but forged in the fires of tribal loss, he joins the Assassins to protect his people. Yet, his journey reveals a devastating truth about the cost of war and the limits of individual agency.
Born in 1756 as Ratonhnhaké:ton, Connor is the illegitimate son of the British nobleman Haytham Kenway and Kaniehtí:io, a Kanien'kehá:ka woman. His life was defined by trauma early on; in 1760, he witnessed his mother's death during a tribal attack. He blamed the Templar Order for this tragedy, leading him to join their rivals, the Assassin Brotherhood. To help him navigate colonial society, a retired mentor named Achilles Davenport gave him the name 'Connor'—the name of Achilles' own deceased son. Throughout the American Revolution, Connor acted as a double agent of sorts. He aided the Patriot cause to secure land for his people and worked to rebuild the fractured Colonial Brotherhood. However, his efforts were met with profound betrayal. He discovered that his father, Haytham, had manipulated him by falsely claiming George Washington was responsible for his mother's death.
To his horror, Connor discovered Charles Lee had tricked his kin into joining the Loyalists, resulting in his village's desertion and the sale of its territory by the nascent United States government to repay military costs. Connor's arc is defined by this failure of protection. Despite his martial prowess and leadership, he could not prevent the systemic displacement of his tribe. He concludes his journey with a somber realization: while the world can be cruel and selfish, he refuses to stop fighting for a better future, even if he knows he will not live to see it. This narrative serves as a critique of the 'hero' trope, highlighting how individual actions often struggle against the overwhelming tide of historical and systemic forces.
