The Scorpion EVO 3: A Modern Evolution of Compact Firepower
In short: Despite its name, the Scorpion EVO 3 shares no mechanical DNA with its namesake predecessor. It is a modern, polymer-based evolution of a Slovak prototype, designed to balance the portability of a pistol with the maneuverability of a submachine gun in high-stakes, confined environments.
Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod manufactures the 9mm CZ Scorpion EVO 3 gun system. While the 'EVO 3' designation suggests a lineage of small submachine guns, it is actually the third generation of a line started by the Škorpion vz. 61. Significantly, these models lack mechanical links; the EVO 3 operates via blowback and originated from a Laugo-built Slovak prototype submachine gun. The platform is chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. It serves as a modern successor to the original small submachine gun series.
Designed for multi-purpose use, this series includes a pistol, carbine, short-barreled rifle, plus an A1 select-fire submachine gun model. Its construction is primarily polymer, which contributes to a lightweight and compact profile. This makes it particularly suited for maneuvering in tight spaces. It features a non-reciprocating charging handle on the left side, which can be switched to the right during disassembly. The design prioritizes ease of movement in restricted areas. It is specifically engineered to be a lightweight firearm.
The weapon's modularity is a defining characteristic. The A1 variant includes a folding, adjustable, and fully removable stock for transport, alongside a handguard lined with multiple Picatinny rails for accessories like sights and lasers. In contrast, the semi-automatic S1 variant utilizes M-LOK attachment points and a single top rail. Its global reach is extensive, utilized by forces in countries including Argentina, Finland, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Portugal, Romania, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Notably, a planned order of 1,000 units for Hong Kong was canceled due to US Executive Order 13936. The Ukrainian military deployed these units during the 2022 Russian invasion. In Vietnam, the weapon is used by drug enforcement and competition teams.
