From a 1991 volunteer guard to a modern NATO-integrated land force
In short: The Croatian Army evolved from a collection of volunteer brigades formed during the 1991 Homeland War into a professionalized force. Today, it serves as the backbone of national defense while contributing to international peacekeeping and collective security missions across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa as a NATO member.
The origins of the Croatian Army trace back to the Croatian National Guard, established in 1991 following the Bloody Easter incident. The force was formalized on May 28, 1991, when members of the first four brigades were officially inducted during a ceremony at a stadium in Zagreb. These early units, consisting of both professional and reserve soldiers, were instrumental in key defensive battles throughout the country, including engagements in Vukovar, Dubrovnik, and Zadar. By 1995, these forces executed major operations such as Flash and Storm, which were decisive in restoring the nation's territorial integrity and establishing a regional balance of power.
Following the conflict, the military underwent significant structural changes. In 2007, the government transitioned to a fully professional force by ending mandatory conscription, a policy that remained in place until it was reinstated in 2025. The Army's operational focus shifted toward international cooperation and collective defense. Since 1999, more than 6,000 Croatian troops have participated in foreign deployments, including long-term commitments to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan and various UN-led peacekeeping missions in regions like Western Sahara and India.
Modern operations are managed through a command structure headquartered in Karlovac, overseeing 20 bases nationwide. The Army maintains a diverse fleet of equipment, including M-84A4 Sniper tanks, M-80 infantry fighting vehicles, and Patria AMV armored personnel carriers. Beyond traditional combat, the force is tasked with asymmetric threat response, humanitarian disaster relief, and supporting allied defense commitments under Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty. Recent geopolitical shifts, including the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, have prompted further expansion and adjustments to the Army's strategic posture, including the 2024 deployment for counterterrorism support in Iraq.
