In short: David M. Apatang's path to leadership is defined by a twenty-year military career and decades of local governance. After serving as a first sergeant in the United States Army, he transitioned into a long political journey that eventually led him to become the 11th governor of the Commonwealth.

Apatang's foundational experience was shaped by two decades of service in the United States Army between 1967 and 1987. During this period, he served as a Vietnam War veteran, stationed at diverse locations including Vietnam, the Panama Canal Zone, Germany, Indiana, South Carolina, and Washington. By 1987, he had reached first sergeant status after working as an Equal Opportunity NCO, drill sergeant, station commander, operations officer, platoon sergeant, and recruiter.

Apatang transitioned into government work by holding multiple legislative and administrative positions after leaving the military. From 1987 until 1996, he functioned as the U.S. State Director and held roles at the Department of Finance involving accounting, finance (acting Director), and supply and procurement (Chief). He occupied a position within the Selective Service System between 1990 and 1996. He later moved into legislative work, serving on the Saipan, Northern Islands Municipal Council from 1997 to 1999 and in the House of Representatives starting in 1995.

His political career is marked by a shift between party affiliations and independent runs. While he previously served as a Republican in the House of Representatives, he ran for lieutenant governor in 2022 on an independent ticket. He was sworn in as lieutenant governor on January 9, 2023, and ascended to the governorship in July 2025 following the death of Arnold Palacios. Apatang declared in March 2026 that he would forgo running for a complete term during that year's election.
